Rep. Zupkus Talks State Budget with Connecticut Fire Marshals

HARTFORD- State Representative Lezlye Zupkus attended the Connecticut Fire Marshals Association’s annual conference on Tuesday to speak to their members about the 2017 Legislative Session.
“I want to personally thank all the firefighters throughout our state that put their lives on the line to protect our communities,” said Rep. Zupkus. “I am working hard this session with my colleagues in the House and Senate to make sure our first responders are protected while serving their communities and that they receive the necessary resources and funding.”
Rep. Zupkus, a member of the legislature’s Public Safety and Security Committee, was proud to announce that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are looking to strengthen penalties against attacks on first responders.
“Individuals who look to harm our brave men and women in uniform should receive harsh penalties for their actions,” added Rep. Zupkus. “The legislation being considered would make it a hate crime to attack any first responder.”
Rep. Zupkus continued, “The governor’s budget proposal is only the first step in the budget process. I, along with members of the House Republican Caucus, am committed to making true reforms to the way our state operates. We need to prioritize our spending and reduce unnecessary regulations placed on municipalities and businesses.”
The Connecticut Fire Marshals Association expressed the need to make necessary updates to the state’s fire training schools. Rep. Zupkus said that House and Senate Republicans have proposed budgets in the past that restored a significant amount of money to fund fire training schools.
“Republicans will continue to fight for our firemen and all first responders,” stated Rep. Zupkus. “Making sure our fire responders have safe and advanced training facilities shouldn’t be a partisan issue.”
According to the Connecticut Fire Marshals Association’s website, the mission of the association unites for the mutual benefit and professionalism of all certified Fire Marshals, their Deputies and Inspectors of the State of Connecticut and all other persons engaged in the prevention of fire and protection of life and property.
