Reps. Zupkus, Fishbein Support Bill to Increase Safety Measures on Ice Cream Trucks

State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus (R-Cheshire) voted today in the Transportation Committee to advance S.B. 608, which aims to increase safety for children buying ice cream from frozen dessert trucks by increasing the truck’s visibility to other drivers, warning drivers that children may be present and limiting the location and conditions for vending.
The bill was proposed in response to the tragic death of 10-year-old Tristan Barhorst who was struck by a vehicle after purchasing ice cream from an ice cream truck in Cheshire in June of 2020.
Rep. Zupkus, who co-sponsored the bill, praised the committee for their work on this measure and is hopeful for its eventual passage.
“This horrific accident, as well as other similar incidents, have shown us that there is more that we can do to protect them, and action must be taken,” said Rep. Zupkus. “I am grateful that the committee was able to come together and fast track this important, common sense measure that will ultimately prevent future tragedy.”
State Rep. Craig Fishbein of Wallingford who proposed the bill, also testified in a public hearing on Monday in support:
“I’m proud to support this important, common sense legislation to keep our roadways safe, protect children and our community, and to hopefully prevent another needless tragedy in the future,” Rep. Fishbein said. “Drivers all know to slow down and stop for a school bus, but most don’t think twice when passing an ice cream truck which will undoubtedly have children near it. Unfortunately, several incidents in recent years have highlighted the need for this legislation. I am truly sorry this bill is necessary, but I am encouraged that my colleagues recognize the seriousness of this public safety issue and are working together to get it passed.”
