State Representative Dave Yaccarino (R-87) and State Senator Len Fasano (R-35), invite the public to join them for a community service program to address the sensitive topic of suicide.

What:  Suicide Prevention Training

Where:  North Haven Rec Center

7 Linsley Street, North Haven

When:  Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019

Time: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

A two-hour workshop known as QPR training (question, persuade and refer) is aimed at preventing suicides.  QPR training deals with the prevention of suicide by teaching ordinary citizens how to recognize a mental health emergency and how to get a person at risk the help they need.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, every 12.3 minutes someone dies by suicide, which leaves over 43,000 Americans lost to suicide annually.  Additionally, there are over 1.1 million attempts per year.  A startling statistic is that there are 22 veteran suicides per day in the US.  This figure does not include active duty and National Guard military.

This program will be presented by Resilience Grows Here (RGH), a group that was created under a grant from the Movember foundation, which was awarded to the Farmington Valley Health District. The two presenters for this program will be Justine Ginsberg, BSN, RN, the Community Health Coordinator Program Director for RGH; and Robert Havens, a resident of North Haven, steering committee member as well as board secretary for RGH.  Both presenters are certified suicide prevention trainers of QPR.

This event is free and open to the public; however seating is limited, so please R.S.V.P. no later than October 18th to Leesa Philippon by email at: LPhilippon@fvhd.org or (860) 352-2333.

For more information please contact Rep. Yaccarino at: 1-800-842-1423 or via e-mail at: dave.yaccarino@housegop.ct.gov, or State Senator Fasano at: 1-800-842-1421.
