If you are an Eversource customer, many of you may have noticed a recent spike in your monthly electric bill. If so, you are not alone. This is because the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) approved the rate increase on June 26, 2020. The increase is in effect from July 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020.

As we work through this pandemic, and as many struggle with unemployment and other financial hardships, it is unfortunate that Eversource has now opted to raise rates on their customers during this very challenging time.

In response, legislative leaders have submitted a letter to PURA requesting a suspension of the July 1, 2020 Eversource rate increases. I will update you on the status of the legislature’s request as soon as possible.

In addition to the rate increase, there are a number of reasons your bill may be higher this year, including increased home energy usage as many have been working remotely during the pandemic, as well as greater reliance on air conditioning as this summer has been warmer than usual.

In the meantime, as the legislature inquires further into this matter, residents concerned about the rate increase may shop around for alternative suppliers on EnergizeCT. Customers are also advised to keep AC units clean, ensure that airflow is unobstructed, and limit use of larger appliances (dishwashers, washers, and dryers) to early morning or at night.
