The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) will begin work in Darien and Stamford starting next month, January 2019, to replace a bridge on Route 1 (East Main Street) over Noroton River.
It is proposed that Brookside Drive will be closed to Route 1 during all stages of construction. Residents will be redirected to Anthony Lane and Hillside Avenue during this period.
The new bridge will be a single span superstructure composed of prestressed beams with a concrete deck on new pile supported footings and abutments. The structure will be raised approximately 2.5 feet to meet the minimum hydraulic opening requirements and will have four 11-foot travel lanes (two in each direction), one 11-foot left turn lane, two 5-foot shoulders, and sidewalks of varying width on each side of the roadway.
It is anticipated that construction on this $9.5 million project will be performed in four stages through May 2020. A temporary bridge, which will have two 12-foot lanes and a 5-foot sidewalk to the north, will be installed to the north during Stage 1.
During Stage 2, one lane of traffic in each direction will be supported on the temporary bridge while the existing bridge will be cut and prepared to provide a third lane of traffic.
During Stage 3, two lanes of eastbound traffic will be supported on the temporary bridge, and one lane of westbound traffic will be supported along the construction zone of the existing bridge while the southern portion of the new bridge is constructed.
And finally, during Stage 4, the westbound lane will shift to the newly constructed portion of the bridge while the northern portion is being built.
Traffic control personnel, signing patterns, and shifts of travel lanes will be utilized throughout the entire project in all stages to guide motorists through the work zone. Please drive safely in this vicinity and know that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions.
