Need a projector for your next party? How about a karaoke machine or maybe some yard games? How about a metal detector or telescope? Our public libraries have come a long way from the days of card catalogs, microfiche, and the quiet, hushed spaces many of us remember growing up with.
Today, borrowing items like these is just one of the ways our local libraries are transforming. In addition to the traditional book borrowing, they offer educational resources, public programs, and spaces where people of all ages can gather, learn, connect, and explore.
Yesterday, thanks to Library Director Amy Cadieux, State Representative Jill Barry and I had an opportunity to see what makes Welles-Turner Memorial Library in Glastonbury unique and have an opportunity to explore their 2CF Studio (added during the 2022 renovation).
Their makerspace area is incredible. It features 3D printers, desktop CNC machine, laser cutter, poster printer, laminator, embroidery machine, sewing machines, and more. They offer a variety of classes, training, and are open to anyone interested in trying out some of their equipment.
