Union – The Dept. of Energy and Environmental Protection’s (DEEP) forestry division maintains the state forests throughout Connecticut. State Rep. Kurt Vail (R-Stafford) joined state foresters on a walking tour of Nipmunk State Forest’s Breakneck Block. The division has marked several trees in the block for a potential lumber harvest.

“I appreciated the opportunity to see how the state foresters mark and identify trees to be harvested. The harvests are intended to keep the environment as diversified as possible throughout the forest areas. With proper diversification, the forest becomes home to a wide array of wildlife and plant life. Conservation, education, and considerate recreation are the focus of the state’s forestry division,” said Vail.

The harvest at Breakneck Block is intended to clear trees and maintain a proper canopy space for the cerulean warbler. The warblers are a migratory bird, that travel up and down the entire Eastern cost of the United States. They are attracted to Connecticut’s forests because of the unique trees and biodiversity.
