HARTFORD — State Rep. Kurt Vail (R-52), a freshman legislator representing Somers and Stafford, today took the oath of office, determined to rein in Connecticut’s out-of-control spending habits and improve the economic climate for long-term sustainability.

Vowing to uphold the state constitution and to diligently serve his constituents, Vail, successor of longtime Republican Rep. Penny Bacchiochi, joined 19 other GOP freshmen lawmakers, including 10 new legislators from traditional Democratic districts. Vail joins the 64-member House Republican minority with an opportunity to bring north-central Connecticut values to Hartford.

“Connecticut’s families, namely those in Somers and Stafford, need some reprieve from burdensome taxes and government spending needs to be curbed,” Vail said. “I am determined to be a strong voice of reason at the bargaining table so we can create a more sustainable long-term plan for our state. We need to produce a climate that’s friendly to manufacturing and jobs important to my constituents.”

With state spending in disarray and a mountain of a budget deficit to overcome, Vail echoed the same concerns Wednesday that he touted on the campaign trail: common-sense governing and fiscal responsibility.

“We need to make sure we aren’t spending more than we bring in. That’s a recipe for long-term financial disaster,” he said.

In December, House Republican Leader Themis Klarides appointed Vail to the legislative committees on Insurance and Real Estate, Labor and Public Employees, and Public Safety and Security. A former prison guard and currently an insurance agent, Vail will bring real life experience and priorities to legislative matters.

The legislative session lasts until June 3.
