HARTFORD – Today members of the Connecticut General Assembly’s Conservative Caucus have called upon fellow elected officials and law enforcement personnel to resist Governor Malloy’s blatant disregard for the safety of Connecticut citizens as he willfully ignores federal immigration laws.
“It’s very simple. We are a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation of laws,” said Rep. Rob Sampson. “Immigration is a fundamental part of American culture, but our primary duty as elected officials is public safety. The rule of law is important and that is why there is a distinction between legal and illegal immigration. We cannot abandon our responsibility to make sure we know who is in the country and if they pose a risk to citizens.”
Conservative Caucus members believe immigration is a public safety issue. The threat of terrorism, drug proliferation and gang violence are reasons why they have called upon their fellow elected officials to uphold federal immigration law. They are strong supporters of legal immigration, and recognize the many economic benefits that legal immigrants provide in Connecticut. With that said, they are also cognizant of the many threats posed to Connecticut residents when our timeless system of law and order is undermined by partisan politics.
“Tucker Carlson had it right when he accused Governor Malloy of practicing selective Federalism,” said Rep. Doug Dubitsky. “He cannot stand up for state rights on some issues, but then disregard them on others. He cannot choose to obey the U.S. Constitution when he finds it convenient for his political agenda.”
The Caucus has found the Governor’s actions in recent days and weeks to be problematic and do not believe the Governor should be wasting valuable time debating the President on federal issues while the state is struggling to resolve an unprecedented budget deficit. They believe his budget proposals will cause further harm to the state’s fiscal crisis, burden small towns across the state and damage our education system.
“We are pro-legal immigration, pro-public safety and pro-rule of law,” added Sen. Joe Markley. “Without the rule of law, our country would gradually slip into anarchy, and all progress would be lost. This is a matter of Homeland Security and if our local and state leaders do not cooperate with federal law, how can our law enforcement officers be expected to protect our citizens with their hands tied behind their back?”
The Conservative Caucus is a group of Connecticut legislators dedicated to the principles of limited government, economic freedom, and individual liberty. Its members facilitate open debate about the role of government in society, adherence to the Constitution, and the rule of law. They propose and advocate for legislation that promotes the freedoms, individual rights and prosperity of all Americans. The members of the Conservative Caucus are: Rep. Rob Sampson, Chair (R-80), Rep. Anne Dauphinais, Vice Chair (R-44), Rep. Mike France, Secretary (R-42), Rep. Doug Dubitsky, Treasurer (R-47), Senator Joe Markley (R-16), Rep. Tim Ackert (R-8), Rep. Vinny Candelora (R-86), Rep. Craig C. Fishbein (R-90), and Rep. John P. Fusco (R-81).
