Rep. Pizzuto Testifies on Proposed Sale of Waterbury Hospital to Yale New Haven Health

Posted on April 27, 2023

HartfordState Representative William Pizzuto (R-71) testified before the state Office of Health Strategy this week on the proposed sale of Waterbury Hospital to Yale New Haven Health. Yale New Haven Health signed a $400 million deal to acquire Waterbury Hospital and parent Waterbury HEALTH among other medical facilities.

Yale requested a certificate of need for the proposed hospital sales.

“By way of background, I am a long serving member of the Prospect Waterbury Local Advisory Board. I am the former Director of the University of Connecticut Waterbury Campus and former Chairman of the Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce. Also, I served as an alderman, for many years, in the city and I was a former police and fire commissioner as well. While at Waterbury UConn, we added the “Allied Health Program” which allowed students to study and obtain their Allied Health Science degree and go on to study towards their P.A. or APRN.  This was possible because hospitals including Waterbury and Yale have supported higher education opportunities for students that have academic abilities but might have been place-bound or couldn’t travel to Storrs or had other family obligations,” said Pizzuto.

Pizzuto testified that Yale is the perfect entity to obtain Waterbury hospital as they have a long-standing relationship with Doctors, faculty, staff and students in Waterbury.

“Yale brings expertise, opportunity, state of the art everything to a population that would benefit tremendously from this transfer of ownership. I strongly believe that Yale is the right organization to take over Waterbury Hospital. I support this change in ownership as it will allow more residents to receive high quality care, closer to home and enhance access to world-class tertiary and quaternary care and clinical trials,” added Pizzuto.

Pizzuto wrapped up by requesting that the Office of Health Strategy approve this Certificate of Need application.
