Rep. Petit Highlights Importance of Increasing Diversity in Education

Posted on November 9, 2021

This morning I was invited to a press conference at North End Elementary School in New Britain to highlight the Teacher Residency Program (TRP). This apprenticeship program is designed to help increase diversity in education by providing people interested in teaching with an avenue to become educators.

As part of the program, applicants with a bachelor’s degree spend 18-months doing coursework with mentor for one school year while also receiving pay and benefits. Upon completion of the program and certification requirements, residents are guaranteed a full-time teaching position.

In 2021, there were 44 graduates of this program.
