Veterans Day

Posted on November 8, 2019 by admin

On Monday, November 11, we will observe Veterans Day and pay tribute to the unbroken line of brave citizen soldiers going back to the Revolutionary War who stepped forward and served our great nation in times of peace and armed conflict. We honor the brave men and women who fought to preserve freedom for each successive generation.

This year marks the 101st anniversary of the signing of the armistice to end the First World War – the war to end all wars. Armistice Day – Veterans Day in the U.S. – is commemorated every year on November 11th to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany to end hostilities on the Western Front of World War I. The signing took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning – the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.

Locally, there are several events to honor our veterans, including:

VFW Post 1607 and American Legion Posts 204 and 147 join together on this day of recognition and celebration at the Veterans Memorial Green. All attending should assemble at the Memorial Green on Monday, November 11, 2019, no later than 10:45 a.m.

The Veterans Memorial Green is located at 561 Main Street South, Southbury (adjacent to senior center).
