Rep. Tom O’Dea Op-Ed: A NEW LEGISLATIVE SESSION BEGINS

I hope you had a safe and a Happy Holiday Season and are prepared to take on the New Year. I, for one, am excited to get to work in my new role as State Representative of the 125th legislative district. It is an opportunity that I am deeply humbled and honored to have.
I was sworn into office on January 9th in what was the opening day on the legislative session. With the campaigns behind us all, it’s now time for the real work to begin.
I am appointed to the Judiciary, Environment and Transportation committees for my first term in the legislature. There is plenty of work to be done in each of these influential committees and I hope to use my position to represent the interests of the people of New Canaan and Wilton as well as the State of Connecticut.
However, for our state to recover we must tighten our belts and bring common sense back to government. Our almost $2 billion budget deficit will not go away by continuing to increase the taxes again and again on families like you and me, that formula did not work in 2011; instead, we need to make tough decisions and change the culture in Hartford. I plan to: Listen to people, Learn from experts and gather as much information as possible so that I may help Lead Connecticut to a better tomorrow.
It is a tall task and one I cannot complete on my own. I will need your help and input.
Once the legislative session begins I plan on have office hours in each one of the two towns I represent, i will keep you up to date on the dates. Please come by and spend some time with me to discuss any issues and your concerns. I am looking forward to hearing from you on the important issues you are about regarding our state.
I am looking into having informational forums on a regular basis on topics of mutual concern in New Canaan and Wilton. Please send my office suggestions on topics that you would like me to look into for our forums.
My new legislative website is up and running. Please visit www.repodea.com for news and commentary on the latest happenings in the 125th Assembly District and at the State Capitol. I encourage you to sign up for my e-newsletter so you can get updates and alerts emailed directly to your inbox. If you have any questions,
