Rep. O’Dea Cosponsors, Applauds Passage of Republican Bill Aiding Victims of Domestic Violence

HARTFORD – Deputy House Republican Leader Tom O’Dea (R-New Canaan, Wilton) cosponsored and applauded the unanimous passage of HB 6520¸ An Act Concerning the Provision of Temporary State Services to Victims of Domestic Violence.

Too often, victims do not come forward because they fear the financial repercussions from the loss of income upon leaving their spouse/partner. This bill makes that decision a little easier by providing that much-needed financial security and empowering victims of domestic violence to remove themselves from abusive situations.

The bill removes the accused spouse/partner’s income from consideration to help lower the victim’s “household” income to make it easier to qualify for financial assistance, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Care-4-Kids (C4K) childcare subsidy program.

“One case of domestic violence is too many, but sadly, there are countless individuals out there afraid to seek help because they worry that they will not have enough money to keep their home, feed their children, and pay their medical bills. For those reasons, they stay in abusive situations because they believe they have no other option,” said Representative O’Dea. “Now, we have made that decision to come forward a little easier by removing another barrier to financial aid for victims, who often endure unimaginable physical, mental, and psychological cruelty. With this bill, the legislature is sending a clear message that you do not have to stay in the dark anymore because there are programs available to help you through this.”

The bill awaits action in the Senate. The 2021 legislative session adjourns at midnight on Wednesday, June 9.
