HARTFORD, CT – Yankee Gas (owned by Eversource) has proposed a rate increase for residential customers and residents will have an opportunity to have their voices heard.

Specifically, Yankee has proposed a revenue increase of $209 million or approximately 29% of its total revenues. Representative Tammy Nuccio has remained opposed to this increase, which would add an average monthly increase of $46.74 to the typical residential gas bill.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority is reviewing this application, and coming up, residents will have three opportunities to let PURA know how this increase will impact you and your budget.

In response to increased rate hikes that are crushing family budgets throughout the district, Rep. Nuccio introduced and co-sponsored a package of legislation focused on immediately reducing energy bills for all residents:

HB 5402 (co-sponsored) – Proposes to repeal the public benefits cost that’s added to your utility bill. Why? Because ratepayers deserve an immediate reduction of their bills, and you should only pay for the energy you use.

HB 5958 (Introduced) – Requires the Commissioner of Energy and Environmental Protection to collaborate with the New England states to increase the supply of natural gas and hydrogen in the region, which can lead to decreased utility bills.

SB 647 (co-sponsored) – This includes several proposals to address energy costs, including redefining “Class I renewable energy source” to include any electricity generated from a hydropower or nuclear power generating facility. More sources that count toward clean energy will help lower costs for all.
