I-95 Interchange 74 Improvements at Route 161 and Bridge Replacement Project, East Lyme

On Monday, April 3, 2023, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will start construction for I-95 Interchange improvements at Exit 74 and Route 161 in East Lyme.

The project is intended to improve the safety on Interstate 95 at Exit 74 and address traffic operational concerns between Exits 74 and 75. The replacement of Bridge No. 00250 (I-95 over Route 161) due to its poor condition. In addition, the improvements on Route 161 (Flanders Road) will address traffic operational concerns and improve the safety for all roadway users including motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists in the vicinity of the interchange ramps.

DOT Project No. 0044-0156 was awarded to Manafort Brothers Inc. of Plainville, CT on February 1, 2023 at a cost of $148.3 million and is scheduled for completion in July of 2027. The project is being administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 2, Norwich.

LANE CLOSURE INFO

Motorists can expect various lane closures on I-95 during off-peak hours. Detours of Exit 74 and Exit 75 will be required to perform critical work. Lane closures on Route 161 will also be required during off peak hours. Route 161 will also experience some detours to construct the new bridge.

Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions and are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this vicinity and be guided by Construction signs and lane devices for lane closures.
