State Rep. Tracy Marra, ranking member of the legislature’s Energy and Technology Committee, toured Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) Towantic Energy in Oxford to learn first hand how the facility operates, its efficiency, and how it creates electricity that goes to the ISO-NE grid.  The more than 805 Megawatt 2×1 combined-cycle power plant began operating in 2018 and is “approximately 30 % more efficient than conventional electric generation technologies, providing the same amount of energy with less fuel and fewer emissions,” according to the company.

The large facility, situated on the top of a hill overlooking the Oxford Airport, industrial areas and undeveloped parcels of land, is powered by natural gas but has the ability to use fuel oil as a backup or for times when maintenance needs to be performed and one of the two gas turbines needs to be shut down.

Rep. Marra met with Ryan Lockhart, Director of asset management, and Scott Kjelberg, Director of state government affairs, who provided an extensive overview of the company, its projects and the Oxford property.
