It was such a joy heading back to the Norwich Free Academy, the high school that I graduated from in 2001 to attend their Welcome Home event for NFA Alumni Leadership. I was joined by State Representatives Tim Ackert (R-8), Derell Wilson (D-46), Kevin Brown (D-56), State Senator Cathy Osten (D-19) and Mayor Peter Nystrom (R-Norwich) for what was one of the very best events I can remember in quite some time.

We were greeted by members of NFA’s Young Voters Society and had a wonderful discussion with them about public service, community, and leadership values. We had the chance to introduce ourselves and answer very thoughtful and colorful questions by the members of the society.

From there it was off to the impressive Slater Museum and the 134th Annual Art Exhibit. To see the talent these students have was something that I truly appreciated. We then sat in on a discussion with the Class of 2024 Honors Program and viewed a slideshow put together by the students and shared the many memories that generations have enjoyed at this impressive institution.

The best part of the day? Running into my senior year Introduction to Politics teacher, Miss Laura Binder! She had a meaningful impact on me in 2001 and continues to have such an amazing influence on her students.

I want to thank the faculty and students at NFA for including me in such a memorable event. I am forever proud to be a Wildcat!

No matter how many years pass, that day—and the days that followed—will always remain etched in our hearts as one of the most challenging times for many of us as Americans. I […]
