Town of Voluntown Tricentennial Celebration

On Saturday, I was proud to take part in Voluntown’s Tricentennial Celebration. A town that was founded by volunteers, it still lives up to its reputation as “Volunteer Town” today. Dating as far back as the volunteers of the Narragansett War and the town’s first settler, Samuel Fish; to Elmer Bitgood who was known as the “Paul Bunyan of New England;” to our EMS and firefighters at Station 53 today, Voluntown’s brand is clear: volunteerism and strength.
In all my reflections about Voluntown, one that particularly stands out to me are the times I have read to the children at Voluntown Elementary School for Read Across America. The breadth of questions they asked me about my job as a legislator and the legislative process clearly demonstrates how advanced they are beyond their years. This does not happen by accident; this is clearly due to our parents, teachers and the over 300 years of roots that makes Voluntown all that it is. To the educators and administrators of our great school system, thank you for your dedication to our future generation.
I have greatly enjoyed getting to know all the wonderful people of this town and it has been one of the highlights of my life to represent you in Hartford.
People helping others is what Voluntown is to me. I will always cherish this memory, and the honor being part of history.
Happy Birthday Voluntown!
