Time to Unite, Not Divide

The death of George Floyd at the hands of a few members of the Minneapolis Police Department is reprehensible and appalling. The criminal justice system failed Mr. Floyd, his family, and all of us for what has happened. There are no words that will bring peace to the Floyd family at this time.
Acts of racism are inexcusable and should not be tolerated anywhere. These actions do not represent our core American values, nor who we are as people, and each offense is a disgrace to those who fought for equality and civil rights throughout this country’s history. We are diverse in many ways, and that is something to be celebrated. Here in Connecticut, we pride ourselves on our differences, and we promote an environment that is welcoming and inclusive.
This week, we have seen people take to the streets to express their anger and frustration with our criminal justice system, and I fully support their right to peaceful protest. It sends a powerful message, and one that must be heard.
I have also watched law enforcement personnel across America take a stand against hate and bigotry because they refuse to allow the actions of a few rogue officers to undermine their ongoing efforts to protect and serve all citizens.
There are good people out there, both civilians and public servants alike, and now, they are the ones making their voices heard.
Now is the time for us to unite, not divide. Let us stand together to rid our nation of discrimination once and for all.
