Representative Lanoue’s Background Check Bill For Youth Camp Employees Passes Through House

HARTFORD– On Tuesday evening, a key piece of legislation that State Representative Brian Lanoue (R-45) has been advocating for since his first term in office, H.B. No. 6417 An Act Requiring Background Checks For Certain Employees Of Youth Camps, passed through the House of Representatives overwhelmingly by a vote of 146-2. This legislation now awaits further action in the Senate before the conclusion of the regular session which ends on June 9th. This bill which was passed by the Committee on Children March 11th, aims to help protect children from sexual predators and other violent felons while attending camp, legislation that Rep. Lanoue was surprised was not already law. Last year, the bill passed through the committee process, but a vote was never taken on the House floor due to the COVID-19 shutdown. The bill will add another layer of protection to those that have access to children when they are away from home at camp.
“This is a good night for children all across Connecticut and I am delighted that we were able to pass this common-sense legislation that is truly in the best interest for the children across our state,” Rep. Lanoue said. “The path to get to this point wasn’t easy, but the bi-partisan persistence in support of this bill ensured that we got this passed through the House. I want to thank Co-Chair of the Committee on Children State Representative Liz Linehan for her advocacy and work on this legislation, State Representative Greg Howard for his support and expertise on this subject, Speaker of the House Matt Ritter for calling this bill for a full vote in the House of Representatives and the House Republican leadership for their support. Ultimately parents want their children safe when they are away at camp and we need to know who is staying with our children during this time,” Rep. Lanoue added.
