On Thursday, the Public Safety and Security Committee held a public hearing on a variety of bills that have come before our committee. One of which is a bill that I have reintroduced for the last several sessions that is of particular importance to all our municipalities across Connecticut. H.B. No. 7055 would tax exempt on the first $2,000 in stipends for volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel that is used to promote recruiting and retention. With small towns across our state facing challenges finding volunteers to fill critical roles within the fire service, this would be a worth-while investment in the name of public safety.
I want to thank Jewett City Fire Department Captain Richard Waselik for his compelling testimony today. He detailed the time, dangers, training, and selflessness our first responders commit to in the name of public safety for their communities.
I also want to thank State Representative Martin Foncello (R-107), for co-signing this bill and yielding his time at the public hearing to Captain Waselik.
As the legislative session continues, I will be sure to keep you up to date on this bill’s progress. This is a critical piece of legislation for Connecticut.
