Rep. Lanoue Asks Judiciary Committee to Draft Legislation Protecting Law-Abiding Gun Owners from Excess Regulations
GRISWOLD – State Representative Brian Lanoue (R-45) has submitted a written request to the legislature’s Judiciary Committee asking them to draft legislation protecting the second amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners. If the bill passes and becomes law, it would prohibit the regulation of firearms by municipalities in a state that already has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation.
“I believe in our constitution and in the freedom it provides to the people. There needs to be balance between public safety, and allowing members of the public to protect themselves and exercise their second amendment rights,” Rep. Lanoue said. “With this legislation, I hope to provide law-abiding citizens in the 45th District, and across the state, with some much needed relief from excess regulations. Local ordinances already vary greatly from town-to-town. If we continue to permit local governments to enact their own legislation, in addition to what is already written into state law, we will create a logistical nightmare for both law enforcement and Connecticut residents. Why create an entirely new class of criminals from people who are obeying the law?”
Sessions held in even years are shorter in duration (three month) and tend to focus on budget adjustments. Therefore, members may only propose legislation that is financial in nature. Legislators wishing to raise bills on unrelated topics must submit a written request to the appropriate committee with cognizance over such matters. If the committee supports the concept, it will draft a bill, which will then be sent to the chambers for a vote.
The 2020 regular session begins on Wednesday, February 5th, 2020.
