Tonight the House passed a bill, HB 7223, which imposes storage requirements for firearms in a motor vehicle. I voted no because this legislation is just another mandate on law-abiding gun owners in Connecticut – the state with some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country.
Should this bill pass the Senate and get signed into law by the governor, individuals who leave their pistol or revolver in their own motor vehicle, unattended and not in a securely locked safe could be charged with a crime.
Individuals who exercise their Second Amendment rights responsibly should not be punished if someone decides to break into their vehicle and steal their handgun. I do not believe this bill makes our communities safer, but it does create an unnecessary burden for many in our community.
