It seems like only yesterday when I was a freshman in college, away from home for the first time when tragedy struck our nation. September 11th, 2001 was a day no one from my generation and many others will ever forget as our nation experienced the worst act of terrorism on American soil in our nation’s history.

I recall watching the images of people running out of the burning towers as our first responders went running in. Most knew their fate, but did their heroic duty nonetheless so others would live. I can’t imagine the horror and fear they had as they climbed the stairs as others ran down.

I remember hearing President Bush say in an interview that he hopes 9-11 will never become just another date on the calendar, but I know those of us who lived through it will never forget and I am encouraged by our children who have taken the initiative to honor our fallen citizens in the years since the attacks.

Words cannot express how deeply proud I am of the Griswold Middle School seventh grade class and all their hard work toward the unveiling of this most beautiful 9-11 memorial. This thoughtful and driven group of young people is a part of our country’s first generation born after the attacks, and yet, their hard work, dedication and contributions to this memorial is a testament to our young people who are doing so much to keep this solemn and sacred date alive in all of our hearts.
