Discusses Protecting Children from Convicted Felons, 2019 Toll Bills, and Restoring Funding for the Griswold Youth Service Bureau

This morning, I was invited to speak on-air with Stu Bryer of WICH. We discussed my bill requiring background checks for camp counselors, which received a joint favorable report from the Committee on Children. This bipartisan legislation will help protect our children from sex offenders and other dangerous felons, which is something we can all get behind. The process of conducting the background check would have a minimal impact on these camps.

Additionally, we covered electr…onic highway tolls. The Transportation Committee is expected to vote on three toll proposals today, which could pave the way for an extra tax on Connecticut residents, commuters and businesses. I cannot support tolls because I believe this state is capable of funding critical transportation projects through other means.

Lastly, we talked about the Griswold Youth Service Bureau and its incredible success with their Juvenile Review Board. Griswold’s JRB enjoys a 95% success rate. Conversely, going to court has a substantially higher repeat offender rate among youth. Unfortunately, the current administration withheld funding for this program. I believe local control yields the best results and I will fight to get YSB’s funding fully restored.
