Today, the legislature’s Committee on Children held a public hearing on my proposed concept requiring background checks on all prospective camp employees. I introduced this legislation in 2019 after hearing about a young boy from Texas who was victimized by a counselor while attending a summer camp. These crimes are unforgiveable and failing to act is inexcusable.
The members of the committee provided valuable feedback on the raised bill (H.B. 5336) and I look forward to working with them to finalize the language. I thank each of them for their input and for inviting members of the public to provide testimony. Protecting our children is a bipartisan issue and I am grateful for the support this bill has received from both sides of the aisle.
I was also interviewed by WNBC about this proposal and I thank the team that came all the way from New York to meet with me and to cover the hearing. I will share the video clip as soon as it airs.
