Hartford – State Representative Brian Lanoue (R-45) announced today that the General Assembly’s Judiciary Committee has agreed to hold a public hearing on a concept requiring adult notification prior to a minor girl obtaining an abortion. The concept is similar to a bill request he submitted to the committee on January 8th. Rep. Lanoue's concept would amend the general statutes to require that, prior to the termination of a pregnancy by a minor, the parent or guardian of the minor be notified.
The Committee will hold a public hearing on this concept in the coming weeks.
“The goal of my proposal is simple- to make sure that minor children are supported and protected while they are facing one of the most stressful, difficult decisions of their lives, making a life-or-death decision that they will live with for the rest of their lives,” Rep. Lanoue said. “Parents or guardians should be part of this process and have all of the information available to help their child navigate through all of the uncertainty."
Rep. Lanoue also expressed his appreciation to the Judiciary Committee leadership for agreeing to raise the bill and schedule a public hearing.
“I want to sincerely thank Judiciary Committee Chairpersons Representative Steven J. Stafstrom and Senator Gary Winfield, as well as Ranking Members Senator John A. Kissel and Representative Craig C. Fishbein, for their willingness to move this important conversation forward,” Rep. Lanoue said.
Information on submitting written testimony or testifying in favor of this legislation can be found on his website at www.RepLanoue.com and will be posted on his Facebook page in the coming days.
