On Monday, May 27, 2019 during Madison’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony, State Representative Noreen Kokoruda recognized Lillian Miller as the Memorial Day top essay finalist. To reflect on the importance of Memorial Day  and the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our freedom, middle school students from Brown Middle School, Our Lady of Mercy School, and Country School in Madison were asked to submit essays on the topic: ‘Why Is It Important That We Recognize Gold Star Families?’

Lilian Miller, a 6th grade student at Dr. Robert H. Brown Middle School wrote about her own Blue Star Family, and interviewed the Pederson-Keel Gold Star Family for her essay. The national anthem was beautifully sung by India Huy a Daniel Hand High School student.

Essay finalists from each school will be invited to a presentation ceremony on Monday, June 24, 2019 at 6:45 p.m. at Madison Town Hall during a Board of Selectman meeting where they will present their essays and be presented with a General Assembly citation presented by Rep. Kokoruda.
