BEACON FALLS/PROSPECT– In celebration of Women’s History Month in March, State Reps. Lezlye Zupkus (R-89) and Nicole Klarides-Ditria (R-105) held a Women’s History Month essay contest for sixth-grade students at Long River Middle School in Prospect. On Friday, the legislators presented the winner Sarah Cooley with a citation from the General Assembly and a Capitol-flown flag.

The sixth-grade students from Beacon Falls and Prospect wrote essays on the subject “How a Connecticut Woman Made a Contribution to the State and Nation and How it Affects Me.” Sarah wrote her essay on Maria Sanchez, who was the first Hispanic woman elected to the Connecticut General Assembly. The runner-up, Emma Fabrizi, also received a citation for her essay on Alice Paul, who helped bring about the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920.

“Strong independent-minded women are deep-rooted in Connecticut’s long history,” said Rep. Klarides-Ditria. “Sarah and Emma both highlighted women trailblazers that have helped break the glass ceiling for women everywhere. I hope all the sixth-grade students learned that everyone should be treated equally no matter their gender or race.”

“I am proud of the work of Sarah, Emma, and all of the sixth-grade students at Long River Middle School,” said Rep. Zupkus. “It is important that we remember and never forget the strong and smart women who have paved the way for women throughout our state and country.”

Zupkus represents the 89th General Assembly District, which includes the towns of Bethany, Prospect and a portion of Cheshire.

Klarides-Ditria represents the 105th General Assembly District, which includes the towns of Beacon Falls, Seymour and a portion of Derby.
