Hartford – State Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria released the following statement today regarding the newly released advisory opinion on the Grocery Tax from the Department of Revenue Services.
“The Democrats passed a grocery tax and the grocery tax is still in the state budget,” said Rep. Klarides-Ditria. “The only way to truly fix the grocery tax is by the legislature rewriting the language. The DRS new opinion doesn’t correct the situation and will only cause more problems down the road for businesses, residents, and lawmakers. I am still calling on the governor and the majority party to call us back into special session.”
The new policy announcement from DRS says that items currently being taxed in eating establishments will continue to be taxed after October 1st. No new items will be taxed. The only difference is that the sales tax rate on those items will be increased by one percent from 6.35% to 7.35%.
