Klarides Sisters Kickoff Read Across America Week in Derby

DERBY- House Republican Leader Themis Klarides (R-114) and State Representative Nicole Klarides-Ditria (R-105) visited Bradley Elementary 4th Graders Monday morning to celebrate the 20th Annual Read Across America Day. The event is traditionally celebrated on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss’s birthday, to teach children that reading is fun and important.
The Representatives read one of their favorite books, If I Were President, to the students. The book, written by Catherine Stier, helps explain to students the duties of the President of the United States, and teaches students about hard work and being respectful to one another.
“Reading to students is a wonderful way to start the morning,” said Rep. Klarides. “Installing strong reading fundamentals and comprehension skills at an early age are a proven pathway to having a successful career in any profession.”
“I always enjoy visiting our local schools to teach our children the importance of reading every day,” said Rep. Klarides-Ditria. “Reading is an important tool that you will need throughout your life and showing this to students through fun events like ‘Read Across America Day’ will instill in them that reading is fun and enjoyable.”
The Klarides sisters told the students that spending more time reading will give them the opportunity to become whoever they want to be, maybe even President of the United States.
Read Across America Day was established by the National Education Association in 1997 and has become the largest reading event in the country.
