On Friday, March 10th, the Finance, Revenue, and Bonding Committee will host a public hearing to consider House Bill 5290, An Act Sunsetting the Highway Use Tax. This Republican-led proposal was initially denied a public hearing by Democratic colleagues, until House Republicans used a parliamentary procedure securing the 51 required signatures to force a public hearing for a bill.

The public hearing will occur on Friday, March 10th at 2:00PM in the Legislative Office Building Room 2E. The hearing can be accessed via Zoom, and will be broadcast at CT-n.com if you are unable to attend in person. Information on how to testify and how to access the hearing can be found below.

In-person: Legislative Office Building, 300 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, Room 2E, 2 p.m.

The HUT was passed by Democrats in 2021, which levies taxes according to a truck’s weight, classification, and number of miles traveled in Connecticut. This tax went into effect on January 1, and businesses subjected to the tax are expected to make their first payments to the state on February 28th of this year.

Our bill will not only eliminate the HUT but will also save inflation-weary businesses and residents significant money during these economically challenging times. I encourage you to submit testimony, attend the public hearing, and share your stories on you have been affected by high prices at your grocery store, gas station, and retail stores; which will continue to rise unless we eliminate the HUT.
