State Rep. Greg Howard: Answers to Constituent Concerns Regarding Exit 92 on I-95(S) Pavement

Dear friends and neighbors,

I have received many complaints and concerns from constituents regarding the unevenness and bumpiness of the new pavement on I95S starting at exit 92.

Below is the answer I received from the state Department of Transportation (DOT). I will continue to maintain communication with the state DOT on this issue.

There is still a significant amount of work to go out there and they are beginning to overlay the “bumpy” pavement currently. Intermediate course is slated to start in 2-3 weeks. Weather permitting, by Labor Day it should be finished.

The current riding surface out there is essentially a beefed-up binder course. The material for this section of the pavement structure has much larger stones in it than your typical top course. The Contractor has wedging and intermediate courses yet to be installed. At the end of the project, there is a rideability requirement that the Contractor must achieve. This is tested by a special vehicle designed just for this purpose.

The project is slated to run well into next construction season. It will get better before winter and all issues will be addressed prior to the end of the project next year.

Additionally, the CTDOT is announcing that a tree removal operation will be performed on I-95 north and southbound from Exit 86 to 90 in Groton/Stonington starting on Monday, September 9, 2024.

To ensure the safety of the public, CTDOT is removing dead, diseased, and decaying trees. Additionally, trees and vegetation that have grown into the clear zone, which is the safety space along the side of the roadway, are also being removed. This work helps save lives in the event of a crash or vehicle leaving the roadway.

LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO

Motorists can expect right-lane, left-lane, and shoulder closures on I-95, southbound from Exit 86 in Groton to Exit 90 in Stonington (mile points 100.92 – 94.28) and northbound from Exit 90 in Stonington to Exit 86 in Groton (mile points 94.28 -100.92). Crash attenuator vehicles and signing patterns will be utilized to guide motorists through the work zone. The regular work schedule for this project is from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday – Friday.
