Looking to Rebuild CT Economy & Protect our Families

HARTFORD— This week, State Representative-Elect Greg Howard (R-43) received his 2021 legislative committee assignments. Howard was appointed to serve on the Judiciary, Public Safety and Security and the Appropriations Committees by House Republican Leader-elect State Representative Vincent Candelora (R-86).

Rep. Howard, who is a Stonington police detective was grateful for the committee assignments, especially the Public Safety and Judiciary committees.

“These committees will permit me to share my experience in law enforcement, on what works and what does not work, as we look to pass legislation next year, said Rep. Howard. “We must make sure the legislation passed in Hartford, does no harm to the brave men and women that protect Connecticut families daily.”

Rep. Howard said, “I am honored my leader, Rep. Candelora has the faith in me to be the on these critical committees during these trying public health and economic times.”

Greg will also be serving on the powerful Appropriations committee, the budget-writing for the state legislature. This year the legislature will write and pass the next two-year state budget.

Currently, the state’s General Fund revenues are down by $1.4 billion mainly driven by job income loss and the closing of businesses state-wide during the pandemic.

“With COVID, we have seen the best in people, our community and state government, but it has also revealed some significant weak spots in our state safety net, nursing home safety, and the processing of unemployment claims, which we need to address in the new session as we develop a new state budget” said Rep. Howard, who will be sworn-in on January 6, 2021.

The Judiciary committee has cognizance of all matters relating to our state courts, judicial procedures, criminal, civil, family and probate law, probation, parole, claims against the state, all judicial nominations, all nominations of workers’ compensation commissioners, all nominations of members of the Board of Pardons and Paroles and all matters relating to the Judicial Department, the Department of Correction and the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. While the Public Safety and Security committee has cognizance of all matters relating to (A) the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, and (B) civil preparedness and homeland security, state police, the state-wide organized crime investigative task force, municipal police training, fire marshals, the fire safety code, the state building code, and legalized gambling.

Rep. Greg Howard represents the 43rd District includes the towns of Stonington and North Stonington.
