HB 5379 – An Act Promoting the Participation in Vocational Agriculture Programs by Small Farms

Before the Labor Committee today, I testified in support of legislation I introduced – House Bill 5379: An Act Promoting the Participation in Vocational Agriculture Work Programs by Small Farms – to encourage small farms to work with more VoAg students.

Students in the Vocational Agricultural Program (VoAg) are required to participate in a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE); many on small farms throughout the state. Students are paid for their SAE work, however, farmers are required to pay for workers’ compensation policies which places a large burden on these small farmers. As such, these small farms are not incentivized to provide students with opportunities to participate in an SAE.
