I am happy to report that HB-5583, An Act Concerning Emergency Intervention by a Police Officer When a Person Suffers an Overdose, a bill proposal I have worked extremely hard on for the past few years has moved out of the Public Safety Committee and will be included in a larger bill, HB-5586, An Act Requiring Expansion of the Crisis Initiative Pilot Program Throughout the State.
I can’t state enough how important this bill is in expediting lifesaving services to individuals who have been given Narcan by allowing any police officer the discretion to have an individual taken to a hospital for emergency examination. This expansion to our current state statutes is long overdue and will go a long way in helping to address the current opioid crisis.
In short, this effort will save lives.
I am thankful to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle who worked together to ensure individuals who are struggling with addiction get the care they so desperately need.
