Addressing the needs of our special education students and ensuring the services being provided are meeting those needs is essential. While there are a lot of facets to achieving that goal, a bipartisan group of legislators and I held a forum last night to better understanding how we and the state can work together with parents to achieve the best possible results.

This forum comes on the heels of the legislature voting in favor of providing $40 million to schools across the state. While funding the special education Excess Cost Grant provides immediate support to our districts, fully funding special education (an amendment my Republican colleagues proposed on Monday) not only benefits our students but relieves the burden on the local tax base. The more we lay at the feet of our towns and cities, the larger the financial burden it places on our taxpayers.

I want to thank State Representative Jaime Foster for inviting me to be part of this important discussion.
