Rep. Hall Champions Dyslexia Training Legislation

HARTFORD – State Rep. Carol Hall (R-59) recently voted in strong support of legislation that looks to improve the quality of education received by students with dyslexia.
The legislation, HB 7254, An Act Requiring Special Education Teachers to Complete A Program of Study In Evidence-Based Structured Literacy Interventions for Students With Dyslexia requires teachers applying for certification for Special Education endorsement complete a program of study in the diagnosis and remediation of reading and language arts that includes supervised practicum hours and instruction in the detection and recognition of, and evidence-based structured literacy interventions for, students with dyslexia.
Representative Hall, who is a co-sponsor of the legislation and previously voted in favor of it in the legislature’s education committee said, “This legislation will help thousands of children across the state learn to read quicker as it will ensure teachers have the tools required to effectively educate their students with dyslexia. With legislation like HB 7254, we are taking a proactive stance in our communities to ensure that no student is left behind.”
According to the International Dyslexia Association, as many as 15-20% of the population experiences some symptoms of dyslexia
The legislation, now referred to as Public Act 17-3, was signed into law by the Governor and will be effective starting July 1, 2017.
Rep. Hall added, “I applaud the efforts of those involved in this legislation and hope that we see children around the state benefit greatly from the added teacher certification and instruction.”
