Today, the Public Safety Committee is holding a public hearing which includes one of my bill proposals HB-5583, An Act Concerning Emergency Intervention by a Police Officer When a Person Suffers an Overdose.
This bill would expedite lifesaving services to individuals who have been given Narcan by allowing any police officer with reasonable cause, to take victims to a hospital for emergency examination. Not only would this proposal provide much needed care to those in need of help, it would also ease the burden on families as they will no longer have to plead and beg their loved one to seek medical treatment. Additionally, it would cut down on the number of police officers make before intervention can occur.
If passed, Connecticut would join our neighboring state Massachusetts who have instituted similar policies.
Below are my conversations during the hearing with State Rep. Bill Buckbee on a Regional Navigator program New Milford has instituted to help individuals in this very situation and with Enfield Police Chief Alaric Fox about the importance of this bill in helping to save lives.
