EAST HADDAM – State Rep. Irene Haines (R-East Haddam) invited constituents and residents across the state to her home in East Haddam for a hike of the neighboring Harris Property and a hamburger picnic in celebration of this year’s Connecticut Trails Day in conjunction with the CT Forest and Park Association.

Residents from as far away as New Britain joined the hike, led by local naturalist Thomas Saunders. Saunders walked the property with the group, explaining trail markers, local history and the wildlife witnessed on the hike.  Immediately following, everyone returned to the Haines Ranch for a delightful picnic of hamburgers, potato salad, watermelon and more.

“Especially in this final week of the legislative session, it was amazingly therapeutic to take a break and walk the beautiful Harris Property with this great group of people,” said Rep. Haines. “I am so grateful to the Forest and Park Association for recognizing the importance of sharing our local open spaces and parks and promoting this weekend every year. I would also like to thank Thomas Saunders for lending us his Sunday evening to share his knowledge of the area, and to East Haddam Youth and Family’s Choose Wellness for donating water bottles to each of our hikers.”
