Hartford, CT — State Representative Irene Haines announced her co-sponsorship of Substitute House Bill 7260, “An Act Concerning Excessive Reckless Driving,” which passed the House unanimously and now advances to the Senate for consideration.

Key Provisions of HB 7260:

  • New “Excessive Reckless Driving” Category: Targets motorists exceeding 100 mph, whether on public roads, private roads with speed limits, parking areas, or school property.
  • First‐Offense Penalties: Fines of $200–$600 and/or up to 30 days in jail.
  • Enhanced Repeat‐Offense Sanctions: Up to $1,000 fines and/or one year of imprisonment, plus 48‑hour vehicle impoundment for subsequent violations (with owners responsible for towing/storage).

“Every day, Connecticut families face needless risks on our roads,” said Rep. Haines (R‑East Haddam, East Hampton, Salem). “By creating a distinct penalty for ‘super speeders,’ HB 7260 gives law enforcement the tools they need to deter the most dangerous behavior and keep our communities safe.”

HB 7260 enjoys broad, bipartisan support and received a Joint Favorable Report from the Judiciary Committee. Rep. Haines urges her Senate colleagues to swiftly approve the bill and send it to the Governor’s desk.
