Can you afford a new Gas Tax?

Republicans and advocates from the food and fuel industries held a press conference on Wednesday in response to growing concern of how a new gas tax will increase your living expenses. Instead of crafting policies that will help residents and businesses meet the challenges of the pandemic, the governor and legislative Democrats continue to present new ways to tax you.

The new gas tax will be implemented as a revenue mechanism to fund the Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI). The program is designed to achieve a zero-carbon environment through a series of stark policy changes and mandated caps on Connecticut suppliers, ultimately driving up the prices you pay at the pumps.

This bill was addressed in the Environment Committee a couple of weeks ago, where it passed on a party-line vote of 21-11. This is yet another tax levied on an industry that will be passed on to the hardworking people who depend on their vehicles to get to school, work and to see family.

If the legislation were to pass as written, residents can expect to see an increase of as much as 26 cents per gallon.

This regressive tax would hit Connecticut’s working class the hardest. Take action by learning more  or sharing your opinion at https://www.cthousegop.com/stopthegastax/#takeaction
