HARTFORD – State Rep. Doug Dubitsky (R-47) proposed a bill this week that will give citizens a chance to buy back land seized by the state under eminent domain but not used for the purpose for which it was seized.
Dubitsky introduced HB 5204, which will allow private property owners the first option to buy back their land taken by eminent domain if the project for which the land was taken is cancelled.
“There are many instances when seized property remains unused and the owners are put through a completely unnecessary hardship,” Rep. Dubitsky said. “There needs to be a guarantee that property owners have the option to repurchase their seized property if the reason the property that was seized is no longer relevant.”
Before the bill becomes law, it has to be vetted through the legislative committee process. The bill has been referred to the Judiciary Committee and it will take many steps before this bill is voted on in the House or the Senate.
Rep. Dubitsky represents the towns of Canterbury, Chaplin, Franklin, Hampton, Lebanon, Lisbon, Norwich, Scotland and Sprague. He can be reached at 1-800-842-1423 or doug.dubitsky@housegop.ct.gov.
