Norwich Heritage and Visitors’ Center Grand Opening

NORWICH – State Representative Doug Dubitsky (R-Chaplin) addressed a crowd of nearly one hundred people June 12 at the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Norwich Heritage Group’s brand new Heritage and Visitors’ Center at the Daniel Lathrop Schoolhouse. Hosted by the Norwich Historical Society, the celebration included a performance by the Nathan Hale Ancient Fife and Drums as well as a ceremonial firing of Revolutionary War muskets.
The Center, which was spearheaded by the historical society’s projects coordinator Regan Miner in conjunction with the society’s president Bill Champagne, is currently hosting an exhibit called “Discover Norwich.” The exhibit is made up of a timeline that displays the history of the city and the significant events that have taken place there. The Center will also host history walks and distribute general information to the public.
Rep. Dubitsky hailed the Center as an incentive for tourists to visit the town and residents to learn more about their home. A long-time resident of Eastern Connecticut, he is especially proud of the area’s historical significance. He was joined by Norwich Mayor Deb Hinchey and Senator Cathy Osten (D-Sprague).
“There was a time when old buildings like this were just knocked down,” Rep. Dubitsky said to the crowd, “and thanks to the people like Regan and many others that really cherish our history and our historical buildings, we have this great homage to our city. I can’t wait to go inside and see what they’ve done.”
