HARTFORD – State Representative Doug Dubitsky (R-47) recently met with Canterbury constituents to discuss the current legislative session and to provide answers to their local and statewide concerns.

The lawmaker who represents Canterbury and eight other municipalities discussed a wide array of topics with area residents. Issues discussed included crumbling foundations, technical schools, Educational Cost Sharing (ECS) funding and pistol permit fee increases.

The prospect of Connecticut joining other states to legalize marijuana for tax purposes was also discussed, as four separate pieces of legislation on this topic have been proposed during this session. Representative Dubitsky believes legalization solely to raise tax revenue is the wrong conversation.

“I would like to wait and see how it goes in other states,” Rep. Dubitsky said. “So far there are only a limited number of examples and only a few states have taken this approach, it hasn’t been going on long enough for us to have adequate data to review.”

Canterbury residents, like residents of towns throughout Dubitsky’s district, voiced their concerns with a very large increase in pistol permit registration and renewal fees proposed by the governor. The governor’s proposal would more than double first time permit fees to $370.00 and quadruple five year renewals to $300.00.

Rep. Dubitsky made it clear that he not only strongly opposes such oppressive fee increases, but will continue to fight to ensure people of limited means are not prevented from exercising their Constitutional rights so the governor can generate new revenue for his pet projects.

Rep. Dubitsky regularly holds office hours and coffee hours throughout his nine-town district. The dates and locations of future events will be published as they are scheduled.
