Reps. Devlin and Kupchick Statement on El Paso and Dayton Tragedies

Representatives Kupchick and Devlin expressed their heartbreak over the news of the horrific mass shootings and offer their sincere sympathy for the victims and the families in El Paso and Dayton.

“The Connecticut General Assembly has worked together arm-in-arm, Republicans and Democrats, to pass meaningful and landmark legislation to end gun violence and address mental health in Connecticut. It’s time for the elected members of Congress of both political parties and the President of the United States to do the same and come together to pass universal background checks and red flag laws like we did in Connecticut. We share in people’s frustration with the partisan rhetoric and inaction happening in Washington.

In 2013 when faced with the gut wrenching tragedy in Sandy Hook, members of the Connecticut General Assembly, both Democrats and Republicans put aside their differences and worked together to find common ground. In the end, after grueling discussion, disagreement and lots of debate, both sides compromised to pass a bipartisan bill on gun violence, mental health and school security.

We join citizens across our state and country who are demanding members of Congress stop demonizing each other and end the non-stop fighting and compromise on legislation to address this crisis in our country.”
