HARTFORD- State Rep. Tom Delnicki (R-South Windsor) stood alongside colleagues, domestic violence advocates and survivors of domestic violence and Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz as the purple flag is raised over the State Capitol in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October.

The Purple Flag represents our commitment to ending Domestic Violence. Domestic violence is a serious violent crime that includes both physical and emotional abuse.

During to ceremony, we heard from advocates, and state and local leaders about the importance of knowing the signs of abuse and the free resources available across the state at CCADV’s 18 member organizations, accessible through CT Safe Connect, the statewide domestic violence information and resource line.

Some distressing statistics, one in four women have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. One in seven men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime and each year in Connecticut, an average of 14 individuals have their lives taken by an intimate partner.

This year, Rep. Delnicki helped craft a new law which looks to end to practice of coerced debt, a form of economic abuse. The legislation says that no individual shall cause another individual to incur a coerced debt and establish procedures to review documentation to determine whether debt is coerced debt, and bring an action to establish whether debt is coerced debt.
