On Wednesday, we spent several hours discussing H.B. 7259, AN ACT CONCERNING REVISIONS TO VARIOUS STATUTES CONCERNING CRIMINAL JUSTICE, which includes updates to the Trust Act.
The Trust Act prevents law enforcement from communicating with ICE for all arrest offenses, however, there are carve outs for certain convictions. With that said there are only thirteen total convictions which qualify.
Here are some key points-
-Expands restrictions affecting members of the state’s court system, enabling illegal immigrants to file lawsuits for alleged law violations.
-Prioritizes these lawsuits over those filed by legal citizens.
-Prohibits ICE intervention in firearm theft cases, even in a state with stringent gun laws.
I have heard from many people in our community that believe that non-citizens who commit violent crimes should face the full legal consequences. I share their concerns and, as a result, I voted No.
