Dancho Votes to Support Exoneration of Goody Bassett’s Name

(HARTFORD) —  On May 10th, State Representative Laura Dancho (R-120) shared her support for House Joint Resolution 34, “Concerning Certain Witchraft Convictions in Colonial Connecticut” as it would clear name of Stratford’s Goody Bassett, convicted over 370 years ago. In her remarks, Dancho addressed the historical interests presented by many of her constituents, while also recognizing that there are still other bills we must prioritize, such as the state budget.

“Many of the men and women killed for witchcraft were sometimes healers, midwives and in some cases they were widows,” Dancho said. “I have heard the concerns of our town historian and its time to absolve Goody Bassett’s name so that we can remember her for her outspoken activism and intelligence as a female pioneer from Stratford.”

The resolution passed with some opposition as many legislators believed that there are other necessary bills that should have come before this, one being the state budget. Following the vote, Dancho added, “The name Goody Bassett is proudly used by small businesses and historical buildings in our district, making this a relevant issue in Stratford. Although relevant to our town, I agree that there are a variety of bills that the majority party should have added to our legislative agenda that are more timely and relevant to a majority of Connecticut residents.”
